In Feb. 2005 I visited the shipwreck found in
the Caspian coast, near the Miankaleh peninsula, north of Iran. It seems that due to fluctuations
in the level of the Caspian Sea in the last decade, the wreck has been exposed
from under the coastal sand.
Given the type and the construction, this ship
might well have been one of the ships of either Stepan Razin, the cossack who frequented
these shores around 1650, or Peter the Great, who invaded Mazandaran in 1722.
Here are some pictures taken by my friend Amir-Hossein Mehdizadeh: And these are pictures captured from a video footage by Dr. Katayoun Fayaz: Vladislav Babkin, of Tiksi, Russia, kindly sent these, and other, pictures
of old Russian merchant ships that were used in the Caspian sea.
